Hi there friend! :D
Thank you for joining me once again!
Today will be a pretty chill edition of the newsletter. I’m currently in a bit of a transition period with work, so I haven’t been as available for art as I would have liked.
But I still have things to show you! Progress on my new illustration, a few sketches, and a very nice Sunday adventure :)
Let’s get started!
Well, it's about tram
So last week, I showed you the finished aquarium illustration, and I’m so happy with the positive feedback I got on it. Thank you so much for your support, I really appreciate it :)
I had quite a few scenes to choose from, but this time I decided to go with the tram stop. It’s one of the ideas I really liked as a concept, but as a small Inktober illustration I don’t think I did it justice.
I was curious to see how this would look in my style as a full illustration, so that’s what I’m going to work on this time!
First thing, I started by gathering a lot of references for the tram.
When I did the original sketch, I did use a reference, but I honestly don’t remember where it was from haha, probably the first one I got on Pinterest!
Here is my reference in my gallery software, Sortie!
So for this new version, I wanted to do a little bit more research and ground the tram in a more classic European design. I was reminded of the trams in Prague, where I visited two years ago. I remember finding them very cute! So that’s the loose inspiration I’m using for this city.
This one is from Prague!
After looking at references, I was finally ready to tackle the real sketch.
As I said I didn’t have as much time as I wanted this week, but I did finish the first version of the general scene, and I already like where it’s going :)
That said, I also spotted a few mistakes.
One thing I’m trying out since the last illustration is to annotates the sketch when I spot mistakes or if I get early feedback. Kinda like notes for future me!
It sounds a bit silly, but when you take even a short break from a drawing, you forget so much. And this way when I get back to it I know exactly what to work on!
This is my last illustration with the annotation on the sketch!
That’s all I have for this illustration for now. I’ve already started working on the final sketch, which will be much more detailed and will hopefully be a good base for the ink.
My goal is to have the ink ready to show you next time. Let’s see if I can make it happen :)
Sketching in a monastery
Alright now I’d like to show you what I was up to this Sunday!
As you may know by now, I’ve been going almost weekly to sketching meetings with some art friends, and I’m really enjoying them! We sually meet in a café, drink coffee, and draw together for a few hours.
But this time was a bit different: we went outside for plein air sketching, more precisely to the monastery in Tyniec, next to Kraków.
I’ve been living in Kraków for a while now, but I had never visited Tyniec before, so this was the perfect opportunity!
We brought our sketchbooks, some snacks, and took the bus to get there there. And thankfully we had good weather :)
Here are some of the sketches I did there, mostly doodling some of the monastery walls and details.
Those textures were a bit tricky, but drawing them helped me appreciate the place better -- instead of taking a quick picture to look at later, I actually need to observe the scene and take in the moment.
Speaking of picture, I also brought my camera with me, I’m always happy to have an opportunity to use it!
We didn’t go inside the monastery actually, but walking around was a great time! If you’re passing by Kraków, I think I can safely recommend going to Tyniec, especially at this time of the year! :)
New videos this week
Alright, now as usual, here are the 7 new videos I posted on YouTube this week!
A lot of them touch on subjects I really care about, so I hope one of them finds you at the right time :)
Here is the best and also simplest English lesson I ever got, that made me way more comfortable speaking :) This applies no matters the language you're trying to learn!
If you want to start something different, unusual, your loved one might be confused, or even opposed to it. This video is about why it happens and what to do instead of trying to explain.
Recently I learned about IR (Infra-Red) pictures. They capture colors beyond what we can see, and convert them back into the visible range through different means. This one creates such a dreamy atmosphere, and I’ve been thinking about it ever since I saw it:
